The Blue Jackets qualified for the playoffs as a wild card team and were defeated in six games in the first round by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Overall, Richards has a record of 85-70-16 with the Blue Jackets in 171 games as head coach. Richards was named head coach on May 12, 2012 after serving a brief stint as interim coach of the team.
