INDIANAPOLIS -- Dolphins coach Joe Philbin is promising to change the culture inside Miamis locker room and make it a better workplace than the one that forced Jonathan Martin to leave the team last season. Philbin said Thursday he wants players to treat one another with civility and he wont tolerate anything less. In taking questions for the first time since Ted Wells released his report into the bullying scandal that rocked the league, Philbin made it clear things would be cleaned up. "We are going to do things about it. We are going to make it better. We are going to look at every avenue. We are going to uncover every stone, and we are going to have a better workplace," Philbin said at the NFL scouting combine. "Im going to make sure that happens." The changes have already begun. On Wednesday night, the Dolphins fired offensive line coach Jim Turner and longtime head athletic trainer Kevin ONeill for their roles in the scandal. While the timing seemed odd, on the eve of a six-day event where Miami and the leagues 31 other teams can interview and test draft hopefuls, Philbin said the Dolphins needed time to contemplate the reports findings and possible punitive actions. The Wells investigation found that guard Richie Incognito and two teammates engaged in persistent harassment of Martin, another offensive lineman and an assistant trainer. Martin left the team at midseason, and Incognito was suspended for the final eight games. Martin has said that the persistently vulgar language made him feel trapped. Wells determined that Turner didnt try to stop the harassment and even took part in some of the taunting of offensive lineman Andrew McDonald. The report said ONeill expressed hostility toward the investigation and cut short an interview with those conducting it, even though Philbin said he instructed everyone to tell the truth. Philbin, who said he was unaware of the bullying when it happened, said he found the details of the language his players used and their actions to be "inappropriate and unacceptable" and immediately helped Martin find medical treatment. "Im going to be more vigilant, Im going to be more diligent, Im going to be more visible and Im going to have a better pulse," Philbin told the biggest crowd of reporters to gather around a combine for a coach in recent memory. New general manager Dennis Hickey insists the team is making a concerted effort to change course. Hickey told reporters that he and Philbin have met with each department inside the organization to reinforce their goals, expectations and standards to create a more welcoming environment. "We want our organization to be a culture of respect," Hickey said. "We take this seriously and we want to set the standard around the league." What happens next is still unclear. Three weeks ago, team owner Stephen Ross said he did not expect Martin or Incognito to be back with the Dolphins next season. Philbin declined to comment specifically on either player except to say Ross and Martin were expected to meet soon and that he took immediate action when he learned of the allegations against Incognito. Hickey did not provide any additional insight and spoke mostly in generalities about building the best 53-man roster he could. Martins agent, Kenneth Zuckerman, has said he plans to meet with the Dolphins in Indy. The bigger question, however, may be whether the Dolphins reputation in the wake of the report could scare off free agents. "I think free agents will be attracted to who we are because we have a great coaching staff, you can live in Miami, we have a great owner who is committed to the product and weve got an environment that when you get in the building and meet the people, you get some sense of what the organization is about," Hickey said. The report found no evidence that Philbin was aware of abusive conduct within the team. But Philbin emphatically took responsibility to clean things up. "I have faith in our locker room, faith in the players that we have. I think we have an outstanding coaching staff," Philbin said. "Im confident in the direction, Im confident were going to make the changes necessary to improve the workplace at the Miami Dolphins complex and improve our football team." BALTIMORE -- On a night in which the Baltimore Orioles found all sorts of ways to score, their final run was appropriately the result of an intentional walk to a .188 hitter and an opposite-field bloop. J.J. Hardy put Baltimore ahead with a seventh-inning single, and the Orioles rallied past Tampa Bay 5-4 Thursday night to lengthen their lead in the AL East. Steve Pearce homered for the Orioles, who took three of four from the sinking Rays. The victory, combined with the Yankees loss to Detroit, put Baltimore seven games ahead of New York with 30 games remaining. "To win a four-game series in the division, thats huge," winning pitcher Andrew Miller said. "Hopefully we can carry some momentum out of that." After Pearces first-inning homer, the Orioles scored on a delayed double steal, a bases-loaded grounder and a throwing error. Then, with the score tied at 4 in the seventh, Baltimore took its first lead. Nelson Cruz doubled with two outs off Kirby Yates (0-2) and Chris Davis was walked intentionally despite coming to the plate with a .188 batting average. Hardy followed with a pop to right field that fell in. Asked if he was surprised Davis received the free pass, Hardy replied, "A little bit. But I was just thinking about hitting the ball hard. Didnt happen, but it worked." The left-handed hitting Davis said, "I see the reasoning behind it. Right-handed pitcher on the mound, right-handed hitter behind me. (I) had some good swings on a couple of balls earlier in the game." Rays manager Joe Maddon justified his decision, noting, "Yates, the guy hes got to be able to get out is Hardy in that moment beccause he really matches up extremely well against him.dddddddddddd I know it was a blooper, but the pitch was elevated and thats why he was able to do what he did." Miller (4-5) pitched 1 2-3 hitless innings and Zach Britton worked a perfect ninth for his 29th save. Evan Longoria homered and drove in two runs for the Rays, who lost their second road series in the last 11. It was a rough night for Tampa Bay shortstop Yunel Escobar, who made two errors, went hitless and was struck in the hand with a pitch. Tampa Bay used a two-run fifth to take a 4-2 lead. Longoria followed two singles with a sacrifice fly and James Loney hit an RBI double. The Orioles loaded the bases with one out in the bottom half and tied it when Escobar threw wildly to first base trying to complete a double play. That, according to Maddon, was far more significant than the intentional walk. "You cant do that and expect to win," he said. "Baltimores playing at a high level. I think we have been also. We uncharacteristically gave this game up on defence tonight. And we just did and thats the story line, pure and simple." It also hurt that each time Tampa Bay took a two-run lead, the Orioles answered a two-run uprising with one of its own. For the fourth time in the series, the Rays scored first, this time in the first inning against Bud Norris. After Matt Joyce delivered a sacrifice fly, Longoria hit his 17th home run. In the bottom half, Pearce hit a solo shot and Adam Jones stole home after Cruz forced a rundown by breaking for second base. It was Baltimores first steal of home since Robert Andino did it in June 2009.
