Toronto Maple Leafs forward Carter Ashton will have a conference call hearing on Friday with the NHL Department of Player Safety over his hit on Calgary Flames defenceman Derek Smith. During Wednesday nights game in Calgary, Ashton drove Smith into the boards from behind. He was assessed a two-minute penalty on the play and then a further five minutes for fighting after engaging with Calgary defenceman Shane OBrien, who took Ashton to task for the hit. In 10 games this season, the 22-year-old Ashton has one assist. Troy Apke Redskins Jersey . That would normally have the Padres heading for a loss, especially at Petco Park. Thanks, though, to big right-hander Tyson Ross and some timely hitting, the Padres beat the Tigers 5-1 to take two of three for their first series win this season. Ross outdueled Scherzer, the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner, and Jedd Gyorko and Xavier Nady homered. "It was a big day for us," said Will Venable, who hit a two-run double after Scherzer walked two batters to open the fourth. "Not necessarily because of the Tigers, but because we got the series win." The Padres had lost two of three in each of their first three series. So taking two of three from the Tigers "means a lot, obviously," Nady said. "Thats an unbelievable organization and an unbelievable team. When youre struggling and you can take two out of three against a team like that, it shows whats in this ballclub, and the fight. We obviously didnt come out of the gate playing well. The pitching has done a tremendous job and now its our turn on the offensive side to get some guys going and hopefully get some runs early and get big hits and start playing well," he said. After two shaky opening starts, Ross (1-2) struck out seven and held the Tigers to one run and six hits in seven innings. He walked one. Ross said he made an adjustment in his delivery since his last start. He even had an RBI single against Scherzer. But he didnt take it as a bigger challenge than normal. "The only one I really had was worrying about hitting against him," Ross said. "Ive seen him on TV and knew he was going to be a tough one live. Other than that Im facing the Tigers, not necessarily just Max." Scherzer (0-1) allowed four runs and four hits in five innings, struck out 10 and walked three. The Tigers have scored three runs for Scherzer in his three starts. He called his days work "Inefficient. I just didnt feel like I was efficient out there but Ive got to give them credit. Im not going to ignore what they did. They battled me and they made me work. I also felt like I didnt consistently pound the strike zone the way Im accustomed to. I fell behind too many guys. I let them get too many hitters counts for them to capitalize on." The Tigers have lost four of six under rookie manager Brad Ausmus, who was working in the Padres front office when Detroit hired him in November. Gyorko homered to left on a 3-1 fastball from Scherzer leading off the second, his first. "It was good to get into a hitters count," said Gyorko, who also made some nice plays at second base. "It was good to get us started. Especially the way Tyson was throwing, we knew we didnt need to get many. Just try to get that first run on the board and let him kind of go to work." Gyorko and Venable are hitting just .163 while Chase Headley is hitting .186. "Hopefully its the start of something. It just takes one swing to kind of get you started sometimes," Gyorko said. "Our at-bats as a team have gotten better as the season has gone on, so hopefully we can keep it going." The Tigers tied it in the fourth, when Torii Hunter hit a leadoff double and scored on Victor Martinezs one-out single. Scherzer faltered by walking Chase Headley and Yonder Alonso to open the fourth and the Padres jumped on him for a 4-1 lead. Venable doubled down the right-field line to bring in Headley and Alonso, and Ross singled to left to bring in Venable. "Leadoff walks kill you," Scherzer said, "especially if you do it twice. Thats a recipe for disaster. That was the difference in the game. I have to attack the zone early in the count." Nady, 35, hit an opposite-field pinch homer off Ian Krol an estimated 422 feet into the sandy play area beyond the fence in right-centre leading off the seventh. Dating to 2012, his last three big league hits have been home runs. He homered Tuesday at Cleveland. Before that, his last homer was on Sept. 30, 2012, while with San Francisco, at Petco Park against Padres closer Huston Street. NOTES: It was Nadys seventh career pinch homer. ... While their captain sits as a result of an outbreak of mumps which has beset multiple NHL teams, the Pittsburgh Penguins kept rolling with a 4-2 victory over Tampa Bay at CONSOL Energy Center thanks to 28 saves by Marc-Andre Fleury and goals from four different players. Brandon Sutter, Bryan Rust, Steve Downie and Brian Dumoulin tallied for the Penguins, who won for the fifth time in their last eight (5-1-2) games. It was a tough battle tonight, Fleury said of the Bolts, who are tied with idle Detroit atop the Atlantic Division. Jonathan Drouin and Nikita Kucherov each scored once for the Lightning, who have lost four of their last five. Ben Bishop allowed a goal on five shots in the first period before exiting with a lower-body injury. Evgeni Nabokov finished the contest with 18 stops in defeat. I thought we carried the play for a lot of the game, to be honest, Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. We scored three goals on ourselves; three went off us in the net. Its hard to win when you put three in the net. We put three in our net and two in theirs. Dumoulins drive from the right point boosted the Pens edge to three goals with 7:47 gone in the third period, and it was needed as Kucherov slipped a shot between Fleurys pads with 3:04 to play.dddddddddddd Nabokov was pulled shortly thereafter for an extra attacker but the Lightning had no further strikes. Sutter opened the scoring on a short-handed breakaway with 51 seconds left in the first period, when he beat Bishop under the crossbar from the right wing. Tampa equalized on the next shift, with 26.2 on the clock, as Drouin popped in a Tyler Johnson rebound from atop the crease. The hosts went up 2-1 at 2:55 of the second on Rusts milestone marker, a rising shot from between the circles, then went to intermission up 3-1 after Downie swatted home a Patric Hornqvist rebound with 34 seconds left. Its obviously something Ive been looking forward to for a long time now, Rust said. I was just happy to get into a game or two and I was just in the right place at the right time. The former Pro Bowl defensive end probably had his best game of the season Monday night in the Giants 23-7 win over the Minnesota Vikings. Pierre-Pauls statistics werent very impressive. He had two tackles, two quarterback hurries and defended a pass as the Giants (1-6) ended their worst start since 1976. What the numbers dont show was that the 24-year-old, who had back surgery in June, was in the backfield more than he has been all season. By his count, he was near quarterback Josh Freeman nine times and had a chance for five sacks, four more than he has this season. "I wasnt expecting myself to come out and be Superman," Pierre-Paul said after practice on Thursday. "Thats something that is ridiculous if anyone thought that would be possible. I am (being) me and all the players see I trying to get back to my regular state. Thats all that counts." Pierre-Paul readily admits he is not the same player who had a breakout season in 2011, recording 16 1/2 sacks. All he has to do is look at the videotapes of the games the past two seasons to know that. He had 6 1/2 sacks last season playing in back pain and he has struggled coming off surgery to repair a disk. He missed all of training camp and the preseason and wasnt prepared for the season, even though he has not missed a game. The biggest difference for Pierre-Paul is his strength. Its just not the same and he feels it might get back to normal until next season. "The way I rush the passer. I feel like Im catching a lot, Im catching my opponents a lot," the 2010 first-round pick said. "Im not being a threat to them how I used to be. And thats basically it, turning the corner how I used to turn the corner.dddddddddddd" Defensive co-ordinator Perry Fewell said Pierre-Paul is pressing to get back to the way he played in 2011, and he is not there yet. His approach as a coach has been to be patient, knowing each game back gets him closer to the goal. "The biggest thing for us is we believe in him, and he has to believe in himself," Fewell said. Fewell got some laughs when asked about his expectation of JPP this season. "I always expect Superman out of him," Fewell said. "We think of him so highly, and he does so many amazing things that when he walks on the practice field, you smile. Its probably unfair to him because the expectations are for him to be Superman. He is human." Fewell refuses to put any limitations on No. 90, adding that he could have a breakout game against Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles this weekend, all the talk about his season will be forgotten. "I think he got a little better the other night," coach Tom Coughlin said. "Im hoping that it continues. Its still not where we want him to be, but I thought I saw some things that were a sign in the right direction." Pierre-Paul has no regrets about having the surgery. If it wasnt done this year it would have been done down the road. Right now, his focus is on improving. He also wouldnt mind seeing his sack total move past one. "You never know," he said. "That breakout game might come. I missed the quarterback about five times last week. At the end of the day almost doesnt count. From the beginning of the season, I feel like I am getting close. When I see that one sack (though) I am very happy I got one. I could have no sacks. Its just nice to have one sack and I want to get another."
