PHOENIX -- Paul Goldschmidt turned a tough night into a triumph, and not for the first time in what so far has been a magnificent season. Goldschmidt hit a three-run, opposite-field home run with two outs in the eighth inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the San Francisco Giants 3-1 Friday night. The Giants were poised to give Matt Cain a victory and send Patrick Corbin to his first loss in 10 decisions before Goldschmidt lined a 2-0 pitch from Jeremy Affeldt over the right field fence for his 15th home run of the season. Goldschmidt, hitting .332, boosted his NL-leading RBI total to 57. He had hit into two double plays and struck out in his previous at bats Friday. "Think about it -- two double plays, a strikeout and he hits a three-run home run," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said. "Last week we were in Chicago -- three strikeouts against (Jeff) Samardzija and a grand slam to help us win a game. Hes pretty special. He really is." The quiet Goldschmidt got a curtain call from the crowd, waving to them from the dugout. "Thats cool," he said. "Its fun anytime you get the win, but obviously a come-from-behind win. A great crowd tonight, so it was a lot of fun." Arizona stayed 2 1/2 games ahead of Colorado in the NL West. San Francisco dropped to 3 1/2 back. Cain went seven innings plus a batter, allowing a run on four hits with three walks. Corbin gave up a run on seven hits in 7 1-3 innings, striking out four with no walks. Cain left after A.J. Pollock beat out an infield grounder to third for a base hit. With Affeldt on in relief, Pollock advanced to second on pinch hitter Wil Nieves groundout to second. Affeldt got Gerardo Parra looking, then Willie Bloomquist walked to bring up Goldschmidt. Coming off a road trip in which he hit two grand slams, he caught up with a fastball over the plate. Goldschmidt had been hitless in five previous at-bats against Affeldt. "It was a dumb pitch -- dumb location, dumb selection, stupid," Affeldt said. "I didnt want to throw it there. For a strike pitch it wasnt that bad, but that is not what I am trying to do to him. He is too hot of hitter and when you make dumb pitches and you throw to a dumb location they are going to make you look bad. I take full responsibility. The loss is on me. Cain threw really well. He didnt deserve that. It is completely my fault. " Giants manager Bruce Bochy stuck with Affeldt, saying he "has been throwing the ball as well as anybody." Besides, Goldschmidt has been hitting right-handed hitters better than lefties. "That guy is hitting lefty and righties if you are looking at the numbers," Bochy said. "He (Affeldt) just made a mistake there. It all started with the ground ball they beat out and of course the walks set up that. You are asking for trouble." Cain settled down after a 31-pitch first inning, when he walked three and gave up a single but held Arizona scoreless. Goldschmidt grounded into a double play, leaving a runner at third with two outs. Cain walked the next two batters to load the bases but got Martin Prado on a broken-bat groundout to end the inning. Didi Gregorius led off the Diamondbacks fifth with a double and, with a head-first slide, barely beat Gregor Blancos throw on A.J. Pollocks fly out to centre to put a runner on third with one out. But Gregorius tried to score on Corbins weak grounder to first and was easily thrown out by Brandon Belt. Corbin retired 12 in a row before Pablo Sandovals broken-bat single with one out in the seventh. Belt singled sharply to right to put runners at first and second. Sandoval took third when pinch hitter Joaquin Arias flew out to right, then Blancos first-pitch single to centre put San Francisco up 1-0. Corbins night ended after Marco Scutaros one-out double to the gap in left centre in the eighth. Brad Ziegler came on and got Buster Posey and Hunter Pence to ground out to shortstop. Goldschmidt said Corbin has "been unbelievable for us this year." "When he came out of the game we felt awful," Goldschmidt said. "We were trying to score for him. We had a few opportunities early and werent able to come through. But he did a great job. Thats what it takes when you have those come-from-behind wins. You need to keep putting up zeroes and give the offence a chance." One more chance was all Goldschmidt needed. NOTES: First base umpire Jerry Layne, the crew chief, aggravated a rib injury and left the field near the start of Arizonas half of the third inning. The crew went with three umpires the rest of the game. ... Corbin was trying to be just the third pitcher in 25 years to start 10-0. Roger Clemens (11 in 1997) and Aaron Small (10 in 2005) were the others. ... San Francisco has won eight of its last nine at Chase Field. ... The temperature was 108 degrees outside, 83 inside Chase Field at first pitch. ... Madison Bumgarner (4-4, 3.46 ERA) starts for the Giants and Trevor Cahill (3-6, 3.27) goes for Arizona on Saturday night. ... San Francisco has lost seven of 10. Wholesale Nationals Jerseys . Detroit and Boston are deadlocked, 1-1, and Tigers manager Jim Leyland could be forgiven if he was caught rationalizing instead of dissecting how his club could blow a 5-1 lead late in Game 2. Bryce Harper Jersey . Vettel, who has already clinched his fourth straight F1 title, enters the finale with a chance to equal Michael Schumachers 13 victories in a year and match the record of nine consecutive wins by Alberto Ascari in the 1952 and 1953 seasons. http://www.cheapnationalsjerseys.com/?tag=cheap-gio-gonzalez-jersey . Brandon Morrow allowed five runs on six hits over three innings. He struck out two, walked one and hit a batter. Edwin Encarnacion had a two-out, bases loaded two-RBI double in the third inning. Michael Taylor Jersey .C. -- Manny Malhotra had two goals and an assist, leading the Carolina Hurricanes to a 6-3 win over the Ottawa Senators on Saturday. Matt Adams Jersey . I cant pinpoint a date, but I do remember a player from my youth. Brian Downing was with the Chicago White Sox at a time when I listened to every game I possibly could on the radio. That particular season the late great Harry Caray was calling the White Sox games. While Oklahoma and West Virginia meet this weekend in a top-10 showdown with huge implications for the Big 12 title, there are plenty of teams farther down in the conference standings that can still end up eligible for a bowl game. With three weeks left in the regular season -- one more than the other Power Five conferences, which all have championship games -- Oklahoma (8-2, 7-0 Big 12), No. 13 Oklahoma State (8-2, 6-1) and West Virginia (8-1, 5-1) are the only teams still with a chance to win the Big 12 title.Games like Texas Tech-Iowa State and Kansas-Texas certainly arent worthy of the kind of prime-time slot the eighth-ranked Sooners and 10th-ranked Mountaineers will have Saturday night. But they will go a long way toward determining whether half of the 10-team league all finish 6-6 overall.TITLE CONTENDERSOklahoma could wrap up its 10th Big 12 title with a win in Morgantown combined with an Oklahoma State loss at TCU. If undecided this weekend, the Sooners get another chance against the Cowboys on Dec. 3.When Oklahoma State lost the Bedlam game last season, the Cowboys ended up as the Big 12 runner-up and Oklahoma made the College Football Playoff . With wins over TCU and Oklahoma, the Cowboys could win the Big 12 title on a tiebreaker. Their only championship was five years ago.West Virginia was part of back-to-back Big East titles before joining the Big 12 in 2012. The Mountaineers, who have never finished among the top three in the Big 12, have to beat the Sooners to stay in contention. They then go to Iowa State and host Baylor.PICK 6 IN THE MIDDLESliding Baylor (6-3, 3-3) is the only other Big 12 team already with the six wins needed for bowl eligibility. There is logjam in the middle of the standings, along with a longshot chancce that five teams could all finish 6-6 overall.dddddddddddd It would take a couple of upset victories by Kansas, but its possible.Like Baylor, Kansas State, TCU and Texas all have three Big 12 wins. That trio each has only five wins overall, and some games against each other, ensuring at least one of them will get to six wins.So how could five different teams all finish 6-6?Baylor, which has lost three straight and will be without senior quarterback Seth Russell after his gruesome left ankle injury, would be 6-6 if it loses to Kansas State, Texas Tech and West Virginia. So if K-State won at Baylor, then lost to Kansas and TCU, the Wildcats would be 6-6. In that scenario, TCU could also finish 6-6 if the Horned Frogs lost to Oklahoma State and Texas before playing K-State in the regular-season finale. With coach Charlie Strongs future still uncertain, Texas could be 6-6 with a loss to Kansas and a win over TCU the day after Thanksgiving.Texas Tech (4-6, 2-5), with national total offense leader Patrick Mahomes and a defense that has allowed at least 44 points seven times, could get to six wins by beating Iowa State and then Baylor.AT THE BOTTOMIowa State (2-8, 1-6) has four conference losses of 10 points or less under first-year coach Matt Campbell. The Cyclones only Big 12 win was over Kansas (1-9, 0-7), which has lost 19 consecutive league games and is close to finishing last in the Big 12 for the fifth time in six years.Unless, of course, the Jayhawks can pull off a couple of late-season wins to really jam up things up in the middle of the Big 12 standings.---More AP college football: www.collegefootball.ap.org ' ' '
