MINNEAPOLIS -- Every time the Minnesota Timberwolves rallied on Wednesday night, the Denver Nuggets were able make some baskets to cut short the comeback. Ty Lawson scored 23 points, reserve Nate Robinson added 15 and the Nuggets held off the Timberwolves 117-110. Kenneth Faried added 13 points and had three alley-oop dunks as Denver won for the seventh time in nine games after a horrible start to the season. "Were starting to get it. Were starting to build some momentum," Denver coach Brian Shaw said. Kevin Martin scored 29 for Minnesota and Ricky Rubio added 17 points and 10 assists. Nikola Pekovic had 21 points and Kevin Love finished with 19. Minnesotas bench was outscored 47-10 and was overmatched by Robinson and Denvers high-octane reserves. Eight different Nuggets players scored in double figures, including all five starters. "We just came in and allowed them to do whatever they wanted to do at the offensive end. We put up no resistance," Wolves coach Rick Adelman said as he got angry while at the postgame press conference podium. "Theres been all this talk about what kind of team we can be. I dont care about what people talk about or what it looks like on paper. Weve done nothing," Adelman added. "Right now, are you going to just give in?" Ignited by three 3-pointers from Robinson, the Nuggets built a 15-point lead early in the second quarter. Denver stayed hot and shot 63 per cent in the first half, taking a 64-55 lead into the locker room. "Nate came it and gave us a huge lift in the first half," Lawson said. "Thats what we need sometimes. Someone to just come in and take the game over." The Wolves hung around by hitting free throws -- Martin finished 11 of 11 from the line -- and cut Denvers lead to three after Loves dunk with 3:41 to play in the third. After Denver built its lead back up to 11 in the fourth, Love made a 3-pointer to cap a 10-0 run and pull the Wolves to within one with 3:58 to play. But Minnesota couldnt come up with a defensive stop to finish the rally and allowed Denver to regain control after three straight dunks. The Wolves wouldnt go away, though, and pulled within three after a dunk by Corey Brewer with 1:13 to play. Love missed a 3 that would have tied it on Minnesotas next possession and Lawson swished four free throws in the final minute to beat the Wolves back one last time. Every time the Wolves started coming back, the Nuggets were able to get a couple baskets and halt Minnesotas momentum. "We just need to play ... defence," Love said. Rubio didnt use the same salty language as Love, but he was just as upset about his teams defensive effort. "We havent done anything in this league. This team has the potential to do something, but we just have to commit to be a team on defence." Several Nuggets players said after the game that they knew they could score against Minnesota. Just two weeks ago, Denver also scored 117 in a win over the Wolves. "Theyre more of an offensive-minded team. We just wanted to come out and dominate them offensively," Faried said. "We attacked them. We knew they had slow feet." The Nuggets have won 23 of the teams last 27 meetings. Minnesota didnt have any fast-break points in the first half, but came up with 15 during its second-half comeback. Denver took advantage of Minnesotas 17 turnovers to score 25 points. The Nuggets also hit 8 of 16 3-point attempts. NOTES: Luc Mbah a Moute, acquired Tuesday for former No. 2 overall pick Derrick Williams, dressed but did not play for Minnesota. ... Rogers pitched 6 1-3 innings of one-hit ball to lead the Toronto Blue Jays to a 4-1 win against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday. "I just try to do everything I can to be here," he said. "Im going to get a couple of more opportunities to start and I have to get ready." Rogers (4-7) struck out five and walked one in one of his best games of the season. It was his first victory since June 18 against Colorado. The 28-year-old Rogers said the key was an effective two-seam fastball and sinker. He got 11 outs from 10 groundballs. "Ive been working on that, getting my confidence back. I got the opportunity to throw so many in the count, whenever I wanted," he said. "I was thinking about it like Be down in the zone and everybodys going to swing at it." Arizona hit into four double plays, including an inning-ending one in each of the last three frames. It managed just four hits while wasting the second complete game of the season for Brandon McCarthy (3-9), who threw 93 pitches in a five-hitter. Edwin Encarnacion hit a two-run shot in the ninth for the Blue Jays. It was his 35th on the season. Rogers and McCarthy locked up in an unlikely pitchers duel. Both entered with a 5.03 ERA and three victories apiece. Toronto jumped on McCarthy for two runs in the second, with the bottom of the lineup doing the damage. Kevin Pillar singled in Moses Sierra with two out and No. 8 hitter Anthony Gose followed with a triple off the wall in centre field. That was enough run support for Rogers, who retired 13 straight at one point. Arizona finally chased Rogers in the seventh. Tony Campana got on with a leadoff walk and stole second. Rogers then struck out Adam Eaton before he was replaced by Sergio Santos. Manager John Gibbons decided to pull Rogers though he had only allowed a hit and a walk while throwing 83 pitches. "Hes been vulnerable to a home run ball lately. He started scattering the ball a little bit," Gibbons said. "Hes been in and out of the rotation a little bit, so all that added up, even though it was just one hit. I know him pretty good, I think." Diaamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson thought his team had chances against Rogers.dddddddddddd "You saw how quickly Gibbons took him out. He wasnt throwing that well," Gibson said. "He threw a good game but when you have a guy going like that, you have to try and make an adjustment on him and we didnt do that." Santos walked Paul Goldschmidt to put runners on first and second, and then turned a double play when Eric Chavez grounded back to the mound. McCarthy retired 16 in a row before Ryan Goins reached on a leadoff single in the ninth. Encarnacion then drove the next pitch over the wall in left, making it 4-0 and giving him 101 RBIs on the year. "Hes dangerous," Gibbons said. "Eddies not just a slugger. Eddie goes up there with a plan. Hes really a student of hitting." The Diamondbacks rallied in the bottom half against Aaron Loup. Cliff Pennington reached on a leadoff double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Willie Bloomquists pinch-hit single. The Blue Jays then brought in closer Casey Janssen, who walked pinch hitter A.J. Pollock before retiring three in a row for his 27th save. He is tied with Kelvim Escobar for fifth on Torontos career saves list. NOTES: RHP Matt Langwell, the player that completed the Diamondbacks trade with Cleveland in which Arizona sent outfielder Jason Kubel to the Indians, reported to the team. The Diamondbacks transferred OF Cody Ross to the 60-day disabled list with a dislocated right hip to make room for Langwell on the 40-man roster. ... Pennington, who played shortstop, had to go far to his left well behind second base to get to a grounder from Gose, and still managed to throw out Gose on a very close play at first base in the fifth inning. ... RF Gerardo Parra turned in another outstanding defensive play, sliding to catch a sinking fly ball from Goins in the sixth. ... Toronto is set to call up pitchers Kyle Drabek, Ricky Romero, Jeremy Jeffress, Luis Perez and catcher Mike Nickeas from Class AAA Buffalo and have them with the Blue Jays by Tuesday.
